What you should know…
AccentCare is home to professionals whose careers span years — and in some cases, decades.
Hospice Executive Director Tye Murphy is a rising star who began his AccentCare journey more than 10 years ago, and his story offers insights even the most seasoned among us can glean inspiration from.
Poised for success
Tye began his AccentCare career as a Hospice Care Consultant in Maryland over a decade ago, and he was perfectly positioned to evolve with his expanding team. As the team grew from 25 to 130 employees, Tye was promoted to Director of Business Development and served in the role for 18 months. Eventually, he took on the position of Associate Executive Director, followed by his current role as Executive Director of Maryland Hospice.
Tye said that focus defined his time as an associate executive director, as he prepared to take the next step as an Executive Director. He read professional books including, “The First 90 Days,” by Michael D. Watkins and, “The One-Minute Manager,” by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson.
Tye also reaped the benefits of having a mentor, a fellow executive director in his region. He said, “My mentor was instrumental in helping me navigate the transition and pushing me to expand my sphere of influence.”
In addition, he participated in AccentCare’s yearlong Next Up program, which provides a career pathway for advancement through leadership courses, assessments and group projects.
Next Up was “pivotal” Tye said, in addition to the operational excellence workshops he attended. “The workshops were like an intense bootcamp with rich content and actionable items that allowed me to return to my site and hit the ground running.”
He added that as he has developed his philosophy on leadership during his time at AccentCare, the heart of it is the respect he holds for giving and receiving feedback.
“By acknowledging the small wins at the local level, teams are encouraged to push the threshold for compassion, integrity and excellence, producing extraordinary results for patients and families.”
